Real Birch Tree History and Overview 

 

General Growth Information

 

Family/Genus: Betulaceae

Subspecies: There are around 60 different species of Birch. The most popular are Paper, European White, Gray and Yellow birch.

Geographical Location: Found in almost all countries with temperate weather.

Habitat/Climate: Most like to thrive in moist soil and direct sunlight. Dry & exposed land is unfavorable due to its shallow root system.

Lifespan: The usual lifespan of birch is 40-50 years. In very good conditions it can last for around 200 years.

Height: The average height is around 12 metres (40 feet). Some birch species like paper and yellow birch can grow up to 24 metres (80 feet).

Fruit/Seeds: Each of the Samara fruits produced, spread around one milion seeds each year.

 

Additional Interesting Information

 

Primary Uses: Source of food for wild animals, bed frames, veneer, guitar amplifiers, doors, model planes, skateboards , doll houses and others.

Traditional Uses: Birch bark was being used as a paper centuries ago. Oldest world examples of its use is from numerous 1st century Gandharan Buddhist manuscripts. The oldest surviving hand written document in britain called Vindolanda tablets also use birch as a material that is written on. Birch Sap is a traditional drink in northern Europe, Russia and Northern China.

Other Info: Russia and Finland recognize birch as their national trees. Birch is also sometimes called “pioneer species” duo to its great ability to grow in uncolonized habitat. Famous plane “Spruce Goose” built during WW2 was six times larger than any aircraft of the time and was constructed almost exclusively from birch tree.
