Real Chestnut Tree History and Overview 

 

General Growth Information

 

Family/Genus: Fagaceae/Castanea

Subspecies: The 9 most common are European, Chinese, Japanese and American, not to be confused with horse chestnuts (genus: Aesculus) which are not related to Castanea.

Geographical Location: Native to temperate regions in the northern hemisphere.

Habitat/Climate: Chestnut trees thrive in semi-dry and damp soil. It’s preferred environment would be in direct sunlight with acidic soil conditions.

Lifespan: 200 – 800 years depending on the species. The oldest known chestnut tree in the world is the Hundred-Horse chestnut believed to be 2000-4000 years old.

Height: Mature specimens vary greatly in height , with the smallest called chinkapins reaching from 2 to 8 metres (6.5-26 Feet), to the monstrous American species (Castanea Dentata) reaching up to 60 metres (200 feet) in height and up to 3.5 metres (12 feet) in diameter.

Fruit/Seed: An important source of food for birds, wild boar, deer & other mammals.

 

Additional Interesting Information

 

Primary Uses: Source of food, furniture manufacturing, caskets, shingles, siding, barrels and others.

Traditional Uses: Japanese Kuri (chestnut) was possibly being cultivated 2000-6000 years before rice.

Other Info: The name originated from the old French word chastain (Moden french ,chataigne) and gave birth to the early English term “chesten nut”.  Guinness World Records has listed it for the record of “Greatest Tree Girth Ever”
