Note: In order to achieve a more natural, and realistic looking tree line, we recommend that you vary your mix with different size ranges of our trees, as well as our Primo Bushes range.

General Growth Information

Family/Genus: Fagaceae/Quercus

Subspecies: There are around 600 different species. The most popular are White, Red and Black Oak.

Geographical Location: Oaks are found all over the world, from tropical latitudes, to cool temperate climates. Most, but not all, oak species are native to the northern hemisphere.

Habitat/Climate: Oak is a very durable tree and can grow in most types of soil, as long as it has enough water and space to absorb light.  

Lifespan: Usual lifespan of Oak is between 200 and 600 years. Some of the trees can grow for over 1000 years. The Pechanga Great Oak Tree is considered one of the oldest oak trees in the world and is estimated to be around 2000 years old.The Kongeegen in Denmark and the Granite Oak in Bulgaria are also considered to be around 2000 years old.

Height: Oak trees can be between 15 – 21 metres ( 50 to 70 feet) high and can extend sideways up to 15 metres (50 feet) when mature. White Oak is the tallest of the species with one known specimen measuring 44 metres (144 feet).

Fruits/Seeds: Oak trees produce acorns. One tree can produce over 2000 acorns every year however only one in 10000 will manage to become an oak tree. Acorn production begins after 20 to 50 years of growth.

Primary Uses: It’s fruits are a great source of food for wildlife. It’s appearance and durability makes oak the most sought after timber in the world. Its applications seem to be unlimited. It’s many great uses include ship building, furniture manufacturing, flooring , musical instruments & barrels for alcohol.

Traditional Uses: In Greek Mythology the tree is assigned to Zeus, king of the gods. The bible refers to the species “Oaks of Righteousness”. A crown of oak leaves was given to people of the Republican Rome who saved a life of an other citizen in battle. It was called “Civic Oak”. Oak is the symbol of an 80th wedding anniversary. Druids from the British Isles, strongly believed that Oak possessed Mystical Powers.

Other Info: Oak is very often a symbol of strength and endurance. It has been chosen as the national tree by many countries. A number of different species of truffle enjoy a symbiotic relationships with oak trees. Oak is more likely to be struck by lightning than other trees. It is believed that Kings Arthur’s round table was made from a single piece of an ancient oak. Royal Oak is the third most common pub name in Britain.  Mature Oak can draw up to 50 gallons of water per day.
