Real Spruce Tree History and Overview

General Growth Information

Family/Genus: Pinaceae/Picea

Subspecies: There are around 36 different species worldwide. Most common are Red, Blue and White Spruce.

Geographical Location: This coniferous evergreen trees occupy mainly northern temperate and taiga regions of the planet.

Habitat/Climate: Spruces will always try to find their spot in moist but well-drained soil, with as much sun as possible. Some species grow well on steep mountain slopes. Because their root system is very shallow, heavy rains and bad drainage can uproot the tree.

Lifespan: Most of the species are expected to life from 100 – 200 years on average. Some of the species however can stay alive for over 800 years and more. The oldest Spruce tree in the world was discovered in the Fulufjallet Mountains of Sweden. Holder of the title of oldest single-stemmed clonal tree in the world, it has been growing there for over 9500 years and has a height of nearly 5 meters (16 feet). Its name is Old Tjikko. It is believed to have placed it roots shortly after the ice age glaciers moved away from the Scandinavian peninsula.

Height: Most of the Spruce species grow between 18 and 60 metres (60 – 200 feet). Sitka Spruce as the tallest of them all, can reach up to 90 metres (300 feet). The same species is also known as one of the fastest growing with a rate of around 1.5 metres per year (60 Inches).  Most of the plus 90 metre Spruces can be found in Canada and the USA.

Fruits/Seeds: Spruce cones are light brown and diamond shaped. They contain seeds that are light enough to be carried by the wind. Most of the time, the cones fall down right after seeds are spread.

Additional Interesting Information

Primary Uses: Spruce is being used in multiple industries. Mainly in the paper industry, ship building and also for musical instrument production such as the famed Stradivari Violins, guitars, piano, cellos, harps and mandolines. Manufacturers of chewing gums extract gum from the bark of Red Spruce and add other raw materials to create colour and flavour.

Traditional Uses: Native Americans used to chew the resin from spruce bark to quench their thirst. Spruce tips were the main component in the beer brewing process before people learned about brewing with hops. Captain Cook used fresh spruce shoots to make an alcoholic drink full of Vitamin C. Drinking it was obligatory for all crew members to avoid sickness called scurvy (Vitamin C deficiency). Before the use of petrochemicals, Spruce resin was used in the manufacturing process of pitch. Spruce tree symbolism is associated with Generosity, nobility and peace.

Other Info: Sitka Spruce is often classified as the fifth largest and the third tallest conifer in the world. The name Spruce comes from french “pruce” meaning Prussia from where people believed they came from. Letters from the Wright Cycling Co. (discovered not long ago) prove that spruce from West Virginia was used to build the Wright brothers’ first flying machine frame. The Queets Spruce is the largest still standing Spruce, with a trunk volume of 337m3. Some of the most expensive pianos and violins are made from Red Spruce. Needles are shed typically after 4 to 10 years.
